Does Coffee Lose Caffeine Over Time?

The answer is no. Caffeine content does not fade over time. It doesn’t matter whether you store coffee on the fridge, cupboard, shelf, or table, its caffeine content will be exactly the same.

You may have forgotten where you left a coffee package and one day, you suddenly found it. The coffee that you bought ages ago, still has the same amount of caffeine. However, the freshness will disappear over time.

The substances that give coffee aroma, flavor, and caffeine are not the same, but caffeine is the only ingredient here that neither gets affected by the stored place nor loses the effect over time.

Is Decaf Coffee Caffeine-Free?

Decaf coffee is a non-caffeinated coffee type, where only 3% of caffeine is left. Decaf coffee has a small percentage of caffeine at around an 8-ounce (236-ml) cup size.

The caffeine content stays the same because it is a quite stable component that remains alive with hot or boiling water through the brewing process. Water evaporates but caffeine doesn’t, and it’s amazingly stable for many weeks, maybe months.

Does Caffeine Have Side Effects?

Overdose of everything has a negative impact on your body, caffeine is no different. In that case, you have to be very careful, and count how much caffeine you consume throughout the day.

As much as caffeine has positive effects, it does have negatives too.

If you get an overdose of caffeine, you may get nausea which is not a pleasant thing to experience. You can lose sleep, plus anxiety and dizziness are bonus points.

Overdose of Caffeine

Researchers have found that only 400 mg or 1/16 tsp is equal to 10 cans of cola and a couple of energy drinks. For that reason try to minimize the consumption of coffee.
Sometimes, it is about psychology that tricks us into thinking more caffeine is what will help us to study, or work during late nights. I’m not saying it doesn’t have an effect, but sometimes it does more harm than good.

Know your body well and how it functions because everyone’s body tolerance to caffeine is different.

Recommended Caffeine Per Day

It is safe to drink 3-5 cups per day according to the studies, but you are the one who will decide how much caffeine content is enough for you.

Many people drink up to 7 cups of coffee throughout the day, and they are doing perfectly fine. On the contrary, the others drink 2 cups a day and feel dizzy. This dizziness leads to increased heart rate or abnormal blood pressure.

In brief, figure out how many cups a day is enough for you.

Dark-Roasted Coffees vs Light-Roasted Coffees

I’m about to break the conventions about dark-roasted and light-roasted beans.

Coffee consumers are really sure that black coffee has more caffeine content. This opinion is created because of the roasting process at higher temperatures.

Lighter beans on the other hand, just because they are roasted less at lower temperatures, people think it has lower caffeine content.

To clear that out, caffeine has to do with chosen beans, and usually, arabica beans contain 1.7% caffeine content, and robusta beans contain 2.5%. They do not have the same amount of caffeine inside.

If you measure in scoops sometimes, surprisingly light coffee seems to have more caffeine contained. To explain more its levels, here are some coffee types and their contained amount.

High Caffeine Content Coffees

In this section, I’m going to narrow down the amount of caffeine that some coffee types have.

First, we have Robusta coffee also known as drip-brewed coffee. It contains 140–200 mg caffeine per 6 ounces on the average cup.

The second high content coffee is 100% Arabica beans. It derives from the same family as robust, containing 75–130 mg on average 6 ounces in a cup.

Next, is Arabica blending coffee containing 40–60 mg average 6-ounce cup.

Lastly, we have espresso. The Italian masterpiece can also be called the king of empire offers 30–50 mg average 1-ounce cup caffeine content.

Can Coffee Be a Non-Caffeinated Drink?

The non-caffeinated coffee drink does not exist. Let’s be clear with that.

The other misconception would be the thinking that some coffee types (even decaf) are caffeine-free. Leave this thought behind, because everything that is named coffee has a caffeine substance in it.

Caffeine is the purpose why we drink the beverage. There is always room for people who can’t give up on drinking coffee but still want less caffeine. I would like to introduce the very well-known decaf coffee. It is the least caffeinated coffee where the caffeine content is removed at around 97%. It has only 3% in one cup.

The next low caffeine content is reserved for single-shot espresso. It has 45mg of caffeine content.

Reduction of Caffeine

It is quite easy to reduce caffeine content. Try to reduce brewing time, as the recommended time is 5 minutes in a drip method, 3 minutes for espresso.
By reducing the recommended size, you will have less caffeine content.
