Espresso Beans vs. Coffee Beans: What’s The Difference?

Espresso is the base of every coffee type and coffee is a regular drink that has different profiles. It kind of sounds the same, but actually there is a slight difference. The only thing that stands in the way between espresso beans and coffee beans is linked with the brewing process. It doesn’t have to do anything with the beans whatsoever.

There are 4 types of coffee beans and they are labeled as:

1. Arabica

Arabica is a very well-known type of bean. You know that release when you look at the package and see the 100% Arabica is written, you can smell the quality of coffee from the package without opening it.

Arabica coffee beans are considered one of the highest quality beans in the coffee world with less caffeine content of about 1.5%. The fact that 60% of coffee brands are supplied by Arabica beans is another proof not to question its worth.

Arabica comes from Ethiopia and a specific plant Coffea Arabica plant. You can see a different variety of Arabica beans, but it is originally dark roasted. There is a lighter and medium version as you already know that is created by brewing the beans less.

Being amongst the most flavored and aromatic coffee beans even though they always have a high quality, you can rarely encounter some slight changes. That happens because these beans are growing in the vertical form at very high surfaces, plus the place should have a steady rainfall. Weather affects Arabica beans pretty much, that may be the reason why sometimes the same coffee package may not taste like the previous one.

2. Robusta

The coffee bean line continues with Robusta beans which shows another greatness in the quality of coffee.

Robusta generally is grown in medium to high trees and is the world’s second coffee bean supply after Arabica beans.

Robusta beans usually grow best in hot weather where the rainfall is not even or balanced. The plant that Robusta comes from is Coffea canephora and has a double amount of caffeine content.

The flavor is more bitter and harsh which makes it a wonderful choice for strong coffee lovers. The caffeine content in the Robusta coffee beans seems to be the highest one with its 2.7% caffeine content.

The texture of the Robusta beans is like chocolate and it makes the beans a perfect combination with milk, sugar, creamers, or syrups and breaks the bitterness.

3. Liberica

Liberica is one of the rarely found bean types and is larger than Robusta and Arabica in appearance.

Liberica derives from the family plant Rubiaceae and is mostly consumed by Southeastern Asian countries.

It grows in the large trees as well where the leaves are bigger too.

Liberica coffee beans give a bitter taste with some hints of floral and spice, plus you can notice a little smoky sense. It is claimed that Liberica has a woody taste and shows some hints of floral and fruity aroma. The caffeine content is 1.8% which stands in the middle of Robusta and Arabica.

4. Excelsa

It hasn’t been a long time since Excelsa joined the coffee bean family. It is also grown in tall trees and the size is like a regular coffee in comparison with Liberica.

It is said that Excelsa coffee beans are originated from Asian countries and supply only 7% of the world’s coffee needs. Excelsa beans are mostly used in blends to provide that extra boost sense, and the flavor is pleasantly sharp with sour in the taste that has some hints of fruits.

The caffeine content in Excelsa coffee beans is 1.1% which shows that it is the least caffeinated beans of the entire family.

Espresso Beans

Espresso takes place in the medium-dark and dark-roasted beans type where it serves the least acidity in a full body appearance.

The espresso beans are capable of quickly dissolving in the water.

Espresso can be made of any type of beans mentioned. You can also use every type of blend which usually the market sells them an espresso machine or espresso grinder.

Espresso has 63.6 mg caffeine content in the quantity of 1 fl oz (30 g). As for the flavor, you may guess from the roasting type which is dark, which means it is slightly bitter, rich in oils, and produce very rich crema in a single shot.

 

Countries That Coffee Beans Are Produced In

The International Coffee Organization made a 3-page research paper from 2017 to 2020 about coffee beans and the countries that supply the most.

The results showed that 169.6 million 60-kilogram bags of coffee around the world is produced two years ago.

Down below there is a list of the top 5 countries around the world that play a significant role and a huge impact in supplying the world with coffee beans:

  • Brazil – is putting the crown as the most coffee provider in the world with 63.4 million in thousand 60-kg bags. With nearly 6. million acres make 37.4% of the total market share.
  • Vietnam – is the second country on the list with 29 million in thousand 60-kg bags and makes 17.1 % of the total market share by producing Robusta beans. People in Vietnam prefer to drink cappuccino made with an egg.
  • Colombia – is the third in bean production with 14.3 million in thousand 60-kg bags that make more aromatic and fruity flavors by producing 8.4% of the total market share.
  • Indonesia – is number 4 in the list of production with its 12% million in thousand 60-kg bags and makes 7.1% of the total market share.
  • Ethiopia – is the number five on the list. Besides being the origin of Coffee Arabica, Ethiopia produces 7.3 million in thousand 60-kg bags with a 4.3% total market share.
